In an effort to try and get some more activity going, I would like to pose a CAT question. When would you recommend looking at CAT software as a student? From the research I've done, some people recommend from the start of theory and some will say to wait until 180s or higher. I had planned on finishing theory and then looking at CAT software. What are your opinions or experiences?

Liane,
I found school incredibly interesting because of CAT and the computer. Reading notes from paper and typing them up without CAT would have been a turnoff, enough for some to give it up, possibly. I still read all my paper notes from paper, though. But do even students use paper notes anymore?
Using CAT as a student, you can hook up and do realtime for instant feedback, rewind and do difficult passages repeatedly, fast and slow, till you get it right. I used to sit practicing, glued for hours, to get it right. If you can, do a split screen with a legal transcript on one side and CAT on the other. Write what you see to expose yourself to all the punctuation and get it right.
Never was able to complete school due to health reasons, so take this advice with a grain of salt.

Thank you for your thoughts, Warren. I will continue to use paper until I can decide on a CAT system. I'm also toying with the idea of having Ol' Clickety converted to a paperless machine. I really like your idea of setting up realtime and using a split screen.

You're welcome, Liane. As a student you have a choice of free CAT software: digitalCAT and others.
